What is a Early Risk Assessment?

An Early Risk Assesment also referred as a ERA,Â is about a 2.5 hour appointment. First you meet with a Genetics Counselor and then you have an ultrasound. At the ultrasound they will be measuring the nuchal translucency (the fluid in the back of the neck of the fetus).After the ultrasound you will have to do some bloodwork. Based on a combination of the mother’s age,the size of the nuchal translucency and the levels of the two proteins (free beta hCG andÂ PAPP-A) in the maternal blood, the probability for Down syndrome is calculated, similar to second trimester risk assesment.Â ERA is followed by an ultrasound after 16 weeks tolook for a structural abnormalities.Â It is good to bring your partner as he may need to have some bloodwork done. Bringing your husband is not always a must.Â Â Â Please be advise that sometimes the appointment before you may run longer due to complications or the person has alot of questions. So its important that you wait patiently and try not to rush the staff.Â Â As this creates tention for waiting mothers.
